data-interaction-id="51ef5519" data-e-type="widget" data-id="51ef5519">Throughout the entire year 2015, shaped by her father’s experience of frontotemporal dementia and as part of a broader investigation into the fear of forgetting in the digital age, Molina Peiró carried a wearable camera that automatically took a photograph every 30 seconds. The vast image archive that emerged was transformed into an interactive work that, rather than “remembering,” generates a form of creative amnesia.

One Year Life Strata proposes a visual metaphor for forgetting by transforming this archive into what may ultimately become the last memory left of us: the geological record. Through a form of digital geology, the images are gradually buried and made invisible. Yet the archive can still be explored through an artificial intelligence system—one that is indifferent to the memories contained in the images and interested instead in the data and patterns it can extract from them. María’s personal archive thus becomes a territory of extraction, mirroring the automated processes operating across the internet.

We have never had so many tools for remembering and, paradoxically, those same tools feed our fear of forgetting. This fear sustains a vast machinery of extraction serving commercial interests, surveillance systems and new forms of control. One Year Life Strata proposes embracing forgetting as an act of resistance, burying the memories of one year of María’s life within a temporality that exceeds the human scale: the slow, deep time of geology.

Tags: Future Fossils, Digital Forgetting, Data Mining, Obsolescence, Mortality, Deep Time, Anthropocene, technofossil, AI, Fear of forgetting, Total Recall, Surveillance, Digital Memory.

go to ONE YEAR LIFE STRATA WEBSITE

Use Chrome browser to best response

AWARDS AND SELECTIONS

Reencontres Internationales (Paris/Berlin)

ISEA Korea 2019. 25th International Symposium on Electronic Art. data-e-type="widget" data-id="38a29b40">In September 2016, I decide to do a little experiment in order to visualice how the outcome of the final project will look. For the experiment, I used photos from just one day of 2015. Within the vast archive I picked the day my daughter Luisa was born.

In order to depict the strata I went through all the photos of that day (1253 digital photos) drawing in colors just the bottom and the left side of each photo, as if they were a layer of strata. It took me about 40 hours to draw the whole day strata section.

In the drawing, I also trace the GPS data (from my home to the hospital). At the end I inserted a memory card with all the photos of the that day in one of the black holes I made in the drawing.

Selected Works Bio Publications News Commissions One Year Life Strata 2017. 3 channel interactive video installation (online platform + 3d printed sculpture) ▶ Video 1 on Vimeo ▶ Video 2 on Vimeo ▶ Video 3 on Vimeo Everything we are will be forgotten in the fullness of Geologic time Digital Forgetting and Data Mining in […]

["post-8009","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
https://trusting-johnson.137-74-81-169.plesk.page/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=8009
https://trusting-johnson.137-74-81-169.plesk.page/index.php?rest_route=/wp/v2/pages/8009/revisions/20149
https://trusting-johnson.137-74-81-169.plesk.page/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=8009
